Many Linux users would like to use their iPhone on Linux (synchronize mp3's, podcasts, appz, pictures, movies, ...). Because Apple does not have iTunes for Linux (its only available for Microsoft Windows and Mac) You have to use the Windows iTunes version (download here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/).
Solution 1: Wine Wine lets you run Windows software on Linux (and other operating systems). Actually this would be my preferred solution for applications like iTunes. Because if you run 2 different operating systems you always have to find a way to share data between different computers, filesystems or virtual machines. With Wine, you can install and run these applications like you would in Windows. From time to time I check the winehq application database to see if there is a working wine version that supports the iTunes software. Last time i checked iTunes was not working on Wine (or just not good enough).
Solution 2: VirtualBox
If you install VirtualBox (tutorial here) and then install Windows XP (tutorial here) you will be able to install and run iTunes. BE CAREFUL: DO NOT MAKE A FIRMWARE UPGRADE WITH VIRTUALBOX!!! I know, this is probably not what you wanted to hear. But I hope it helps! Read here if you want to know how to automatically startup Windows XP in VirtualBox when you plug in your iPhone.
